Transport Canada Elevating Enforcement of Drone Rules

Transport Canada has launched a new drone safety campaign, while at the same time working on simplifying regulations to focus on minimizing the risks with unmanned aerial vehicles.

Marc Garneau, Minister of Transportation, was joined by representatives from law enforcement and the aviation industry at the Ottawa Airport on Monday to unveil the initiative โ€” a day after a UAV came with several dozen metres of a plane over Winnipeg.

With many Canadian farmers acquiring drones in the last year or two, there have been questions and some confusion about how their use fits in the current regulations.

Aaron McCrorie grew up on a farm near Minnedosa, Manitoba and is now the director general of civil aviation with Transport Canada. He joined us to discuss some of the common unsafe practices they see, their shift to more aggressive enforcement, how current rules apply to drone use on farms and the government’s plans to publish new drone regulations in early 2017:
