Growing 4-H Leaders $1 at a Time

More than $140,000 over the past three years.

That’s the latest tally for SeCan’s ongoing ‘Grow a Leader’ program that sees the seed company contribute $1 for every unit of soybean seed purchased by grower customers during its ‘early order’ week in October.

SeCan communications manager Brenda Trask explains that the program is based on the Tim Hortons Send a Kid to Camp promotion, and all proceeds go to 4-H programs in Ontario, Manitoba and Quebec. “The money goes to 4-H in the province, to the County and down to the local clubs,” says Trask. “For farmers, if you participate, it really does mean you are helping the 4-H program in your local area.”

In August, SeCan presented a cheque for $54,549 to 4-H representing proceeds from the 2016 campaign. Trask adds that the 2017 campaign will run from October 10 to 17. “You can order soybeans and if you actually purchase them in the spring, SeCan will donate one dollar per unit to 4-H,” says Trask. “We’re very proud of that and we’re very thankful to farmers for having bought into the program and supported 4-H.”
