No Screens to Clean in Mixed-Flow Dryer

by

Are you tired of cleaning grain dryer screens? If so, Sukup’s new mixed-flow grain dryer is worth a look.

“We’ve had a lot of customers say they are just tired of cleaning screens… They want a screenless dryer and the mixed flow gives us that capability,” says Sukup dryer sales director Kerry Hartwig.

Sukup showed off the new dryer at the Farm Progress Show in Boone, Iowa last month. In this video, Hartwig explains the unique concept, which features a triangular duct drying section that transitions to a screened area for vacuum or suction cooling. Heat is recovered from the grain as it cools, and can be recycled to reduce fuel requirements.

Hartwig notes that the combination of ducts and screens also allows the new dryer to utilize a single conveyor unloading system. Other dryers typically require two to three conveyors.

“It’s also a little more gentle on the grain,” adds Hartwig. “It runs about 40 CFM (cubic feet per minute) of airflow per bushel, which is about half of what our cross-flow dryers run, so each kernel is heated up half as fast…. That’s going to be a little better on grain quality in developing less fines and cracks.”

Hartwig says the new dryer is currently going through CSA standards testing and approvals. The company hopes to have it available in Canada for harvest 2017.
