Wheat Pete's Word — Sept 29: Punky Corn Cobs, Yield Monitor Highs, & Orange Gas Warnings

Yes, we’re a day late with Wheat Pete’s Word, but it was so worth it because we broke a record for most questions in a week! Well, OK, that’s not quite true, but it was so close — so hats off to you, dear listeners and readers, we really do appreciate all the interactions and the great questions.

And with that…let’s go for this LAST September update of 2016… (summary, in order of discussion is below video)

Highlights

Soybeans:

• Many poor beans in areas hit hardest by drought — high header losses and black, shrivelled beans (hilum bleed?)
• Areas that did get rain in mid-August. Beans are better than anticipated.
• Send us your yield monitor snaps — sky high soybean. Highest report so far is 98 bu/ac (don’t cheat by slowing the combine down!)
• Regrowth in soybeans often shows up where there’s been severe drought stress followed by moisture. Should you burndown?

Corn:

• Alert! Giberella in corn — pink mould, far more than anticipated with high levels of mycotoxins.
• Some corn already being delivered
• What to do with this corn? Cattle can handle more vomitoxin than monogastrics. Binding agents are getting better. Keep fines and cobs out if feeding to pigs. Punky cobs are full of fusarium.
• Some old crop, low-disease corn still in storage — should be highly sought after as hog feed.
• Amazing corn crop in Quebec.
• Orangish, yellowish, brownish gas in corn bunker is nitrogen dioxide — deadly! Stay out!

Weed control: 

• Eragon and glyphosate combo questions.
• Fleabane rosettes not dying — glyphosate resistant!
• Vetch control  — lots of tufted vetch out there. Discussion about control options. Needs to be done before it goes dormant.

Hay

• Hay prices at unbelievable high prices.
• Make second cut on new seeded?

Boron

• Is boron safe with wheat seed? What about response in cereals?
