Alberta Government Proposes Helmet Law for Off-Highway Vehicles

by

Today the Alberta NDP government introduced legislation to make it mandatory for all ATV riders (with some exemptions) to wear a helmet. At this time, some of the exemptions include: private and indigenous land and farm and ranch workers. Future exemptions will be added based on machines that have roll bars and seat belts.

In the press release, it states that farmers and ranchers are exempt under the current OHS regulation. We all know that this is likely to change once the OHS technical groups report back to the Minister of Agriculture & Forestry and the Ministry of Labour.

Hear some of the questions asked of the Minister of Transportation.

It would appear at this point that the main target of this bill are leisure riders in the back country or hunters. Although as noted above, it is very imaginable the Bill 6 technical working groups could suggest farmers and ranchers wear helmets once the final reports are submitted.

It was reported in the press conference that fines will be $155.

We will have more information as it comes available.
