Why is it that, on the same farm, you’ll see super great, brand-new canola varieties growing right next to old wheat genetics?
In this episode of the Growing Series podcast, Janel Delage, Saskatchewan-based agronomist with Cargill, joins RealAgriculture’s Shaun Haney to talk about the benefits and attributes of new wheat genetics.
Specifically, new genetics have much-improved disease resistance. “We don’t have a resistant line yet (to fusarium head blight),” Delage says, but new lines have much better tolerance than older varieties. What’s more, new lines offer improved insect fighting properties, ie. midge tolerance, all packaged with improved yield potential.
Listen below to hear why you may want to take a fresh look at new wheat lines.
