TechTour: How To Build A Driverless Tractor

Innovation is a constant part of life on most farms. A farmer’s mind is often focused on figuring out how to make something run more efficiently.

Together with Dow AgroSciences we’re excited to launch the 2017 season of the TechTour here on RealAgriculture. Over the coming months we are going to shine a spotlight on innovations that have occurred on farms — new inventions or concepts developed by farmers.

Matt Reimer, of Killarney, Man., is a great example of this, having turned a John Deere 7930 tractor into a homemade driverless grain cart system. The set up is the result of some Internet research on computer coding and modifying off-the-shelf auto-pilot technology meant for remote control planes.

We visited Reimer’s farm during the 2016 canola harvest to find out the story behind the automated grain cart system, to see how it works, and to find out how he sees this technology helping farmers.
