Beef Market Update: China, the Beef Export Holy Grail

by

It’s time for another episode of the Beef Market Update!

Shaun Haney and Anne Wasko are fresh off their trip to Nashville and they have much to discuss. Canada has agreed that they will attend the the March “post-TPP” meeting in Chile with most of the other countries minus the United States. Also invited is South Korea and China. This is potentially big news for Canadian beef exports.

Anne and Shaun talk about why China is so important to the future of beef exports for Canada. With incomes in China rising and beef consumption on its way up as well, countries like the US and Canada are very focused on supplying China with all the beef they need. Currently the average Chinese consumer only consumes ten pounds of beef per year, but that is expected to rise.

Also, this week Anne Wasko travelled throughout British Columbia ranching country to present a market update to producers, so she shares some of the questions, concerns and thoughts on what is on the ranchers mind in this current market.
