Leal Announces Funds for Upgrade at Cargill Beef Plant

by

Ontario Ag Minister Jeff Leal was in Guelph on Wednesday to announce provincial funding for upgrades at Cargill’s beef processing plant.

The province is contributing $582,000 toward a $3.5 million upgrade that will enable Cargill to produce a protein-rich animal feed ingredient using raw by-product.

“By investing in technology that will support local production, we are helping ensure Cargill’s operations remain viable and provide great jobs for people right here in Guelph,” said Leal.

“We are reducing our environmental footprint as a result of fewer emissions from transportation, retaining jobs in Guelph and improving efficiencies in Ontario’s beef supply chain. We greatly appreciate the commitment the province has shown in this investment partnership,” noted Matt Gibney, general manager of the Cargill plant in Guelph.

According to the company’s website, the Cargill plant in Guelph employs 950 people and processes 1,500 head of cattle per day.
