Soybean School: Pre-plant Application Best Strategy for Dicamba Tolerant Technology

by

In Canada, hundreds of thousands of acres will be planted to dicamba- and glyphosate-tolerant Xtend soybeans this spring.

That means growers and custom applicators will need to be vigilant in their stewardship efforts to ensure dicamba herbicide hits the target when sprayed and stays put.

In a special two-part Soybean School, filmed at Woodrill Farms near Guelph, Ont., RealAgriculture’s Bernard Tobin is joined by BASF Canada technical development manager Rob Miller to discuss management strategy and application tips to best manage the new technology. In Part One, Miller discusses Engenia, BASF’s new dicamba formulation, and how it’s less volatile than previous formulations.

Miller says the best strategy for growers when applying dicamba on Xtend soybeans is to target a pre-plant application, especially when dealing with glyphosate resistant weeds such as Canada fleabane.

“Get as much as you can down pre,” says Miller. “Control those weeds, use multiple modes of effective action, and only use dicamba in-crop if need be to control tough weeds.”

Miller also discusses how the new dicamba formulation performs in wet and dry conditions and how increased water volumes may be required this spring to tackle winter annuals such as Canada fleabane, chickweed and sow thistle that have prospered during the mild Ontario winter.

Stay tuned for Part Two of the series when Miller focuses on application tips to manage off-target movement.
