Canadian Farm Equipment Sales Showing Strength

by

Sales of new farm equipment through the first quarter of 2017 are up compared to the same time last year.

Whether it’s due to the currency market benefiting Canadian producers on the selling side, dealer program timing, or a combination of different factors, the Association of Equipment Manufacturers’ latest report doesn’t go into the “why,” but it shows sales are definitely up year-over-year.

Total farm tractor unit sales in Canada through the end of March were up 24.6 percent versus the same period in 2016. Breaking that number down, sales of 2WD tractors were up 25.2 percent, while 4WD tractor sales grew by 14.1 percent.

The combine category has seen the largest jump year-over-year, with unit sales up 60.7 percent.

It’s a different story in the U.S., where total farm tractor sales are 5.4 percent higher. 2WD sales are up 5.6 percent, while 4WD tractor sales are down 12.8 percent. Combine sales in the U.S. are 16.0 percent lower than during the first quarter of 2016.
