Wheat School: Splitting Nitrogen Makes You Smarter

by

Will you be splitting your wheat nitrogen application this spring?

Agronomist Peter Johnson thinks you should. In this episode of Real Agriculture Wheat School, Johnson reviews the split N strategy and why growers should take a hard look at making it part of their management plan.

“First of all, it simply buys you insurance against nitrogen loss from saturated soil,” Johnson says. He also feels splitting N makes growers smarter because at second application they know their moisture status and have been tracking temperature so they have a much better read on nitrogen uptake and loss.

In the school video below, Johnson takes a look at two different winter wheat crops and discusses which fields are the best candidates for split N application. As he explains, those good-looking, high potential fields are likely the best candidates because the split application can help manage the potential for lodging.

Johnson also reviews application timing and your potential return on investing in spit N. “It won’t always pay, but it will make you a better manager,” he says.
