Canola School: Options for seeding canola in wet conditions

by

For some farmers in some southern parts of Western Canada, seeding is starting to wrap up.

But others are still have the challenge of getting last year’s crop off, all while trying to get this year’s crop in the ground.

In this Canola School episode, we talk to Brittany Hennig, agronomy specialist for the Canola Council of Canada, about what options farmers have with all the wet conditions they have been facing.

“In Alberta, the report came close to a million acres that are still unharvested, and this was about a week ago,” notes Hennig.

She says that broadcast seeding is an option, but adds producers should wait it out for awhile before they start to panic and choose the less reliable option.

“With broadcasting you definitely have some risks. So if you float in your nitrogen, you are going to have some volatilization. You’re also not going to have proper pea placement,” says Hennig.

When you do get out in those fields, Hennig encourages producers to visit www.canolacalculator.ca to have access to their recently launched seeding rate calculator and target plant density calculator.
