Mandatory GM labeling bill defeated in House of Commons

by

A private member’s bill that would have required a GM label to sell “any food that is genetically modified” was defeated in the House of Commons on Wednesday.

Quebec NDP MP Pierre-Luc Dusseault introduced the draft legislation (read the Bill C-291 here), with NDP agriculture critic Ruth Ellen Brosseau speaking in favour of it.

As is usually the case with private member’s bills, Bill C-291 was defeated, by a margin of 216-67. All NDP, Bloc and Green MPs, along with 22 Liberals, voted ‘yea.’ The majority of the Liberal caucus and all Conservative MPs voted against it.
