This spring, the RealAgriculture content team is pleased to be joined by Alberta-based Kara Oosterhuis. Kara will be busy in the field filming across Alberta and Saskatchewan.
Hello there! My name is Kara Oosterhuis, and I am excited and proud to be the newest member of the RealAgriculture team. I grew up on a mixed irrigation and dryland grain farm northeast of the small town of Bow Island, Alta. My family has grown many crops throughout the years, focusing on grain, oilseeds, forages, and pulse crops, both for seed and commercial production. I always have had a love for agriculture, however, I didn’t realize to what extent until I moved off to the big city of Calgary after I graduated high school.
I’ve spent the last two years in Calgary at Southern Alberta Institute of Technology attending their radio, television, and broadcast news program, majoring in broadcast news. I moved from a town of just over 2,000 people, to a city of with a population of approximately 1.2 million. I didn’t think my knowledge or background in agriculture would tie into the program at all… until one of my first assignments, where I was handed a general agriculture-based story to cover. The rest of the class groaned, while I thought – hey, this is something I can do!
Low and behold, agriculture became a big part of my past two years of school. I attended the Calgary Stampede as a reporter last summer, creating a mini-documentary based around technology and agriculture, and attended the Advancing Women in Agriculture Conference this past March in Calgary. When I realized that “irrigation pivot” or “cereal crop” (is that where they grow Cocoa Puffs and Lucky Charms?) were foreign words to my instructors and classmates, I decided my goal was to help the world through media better understand what the world of agriculture really is about.
Which brings me now to RealAgriculture, where I look forward to entertaining and educating you all this summer as a field reporter across Alberta and Saskatchewan!
