Dairy Farmers of Canada executive director stepping down

Dairy Farmers of Canada (DFC) will likely be without an executive director when negotiations on a new North American Free Trade Agreement begin later this summer, where the U.S. will push to gain increased access to the Canadian dairy market.

DFC’s current executive director, Caroline Emond, has decided to step down effective July 4th.

A statement from DFC’s board of directors says Emond “played a critical role in several transformational files” since joining DFC in January 2015, noting “she has shown to be a well-respected lobbyist and a dedicated leader.”

Her accomplishments include leading producers to a new agreement-in-principle with dairy processors, overseeing the transition to DFC’s new “visual identity” and branding, and helping minimize the impacts of the Trans-Pacific Partnership on dairy farmers, according to DFC.

“Caroline has brought a breath of fresh air to DFC. We are grateful for her legacy, which will contribute to a bright future for the dairy industry. She was instrumental in one of the most challenging times in the history of Canada dairy industry,” said DFC president Wally Smith.

DFC says it will be conducting a search for a new executive director over the next few months.
