Why the U.S. dairy industry is demanding more access to Canada — Mike Opperman

by

Canada has its sacred cow with milk. That’s well known, but what about the U.S. point of view? Why’s the American dairy industry so set on at least cracking the pillars of Canada’s dairy supply management?

The U.S. dairy market is over supplied, and boosting export demand is a solution. It’s very similar to how Canada’s beef and grain sectors require trade and market access to remain economically viable.

To get some U.S. perspective on the issue, I spoke with Mike Opperman, editor of Farm Journal’s MILK magazine, about why the dairy industry in the U.S. has President Trump’s ear, whether this mountain will turn into a volcano, the impact of U.S. dairy subsidies, and why the U.S. is seeking access to every export market it can find with its current supply situation.
