Alberta Wheat and Alberta Barley announce trial management amalgamation

by

Alberta Barley this morning announced the appointment of Tom Steve as general manager, a role he will take on in addition to his current role as general manager of the Alberta Wheat Commission (AWC).

“Our board saw this as an excellent opportunity to leverage the strong working relationship we have with the Alberta Wheat Commission,” says Jason Lenz, chair of Alberta Barley. “By exploring the idea of a single management team, we hope to identify ways to provide greater value to the province’s wheat and barley farmers.”

The organizations will assess the feasibility of amalgamating over a four-month trial period, with Steve responsible for reporting to both boards. The boards currently share office space, and accounting/administrative staff.

“Since our inception in 2012 we have collaborated with Alberta Barley on projects that serve both crops,” says Kevin Auch, chair of the AWC. “With a shared management structure, we believe we can operate with maximum efficiency and provide the best possible return on investment to farmers.”

In early 2018, following the trial period, the boards will assess the collaboration and determine whether or not to formalize the new management structure.
