New residual herbicide tackles resistant weeds

by

Canadian corn and soybean growers have a new tool to tackle resistant and tough-to-control weeds.

Zidua SC, a new Group 15 herbicide from BASF, will be available in 2018.

Deven Esqueda, BASF corn and soybeans crop manager, says the herbicide is labelled for use in herbicide-tolerant soybeans and field corn. With the active ingredient pyroxasulfone, it will allow growers “to add residual Group 15 activity to their weed management strategy and become less reliant on glyphosate,” she says.

In an interview at Canada’s Outdoor Farm Show, Esqueda explained that the new herbicide will play an important role in helping growers manage resistant weeds including waterhemp and redroot pigweed. The residual activity in Zidua SC helps to inhibit early root and shoot growth in these tough to control weeds, helping to maximize corn and soybean yield through the critical weed-free period. The herbicide also provides flushing control of barnyard grass, crabgrass, green and yellow foxtail.

Zidua SC is a stand-alone solution but it can also be tank-mixed with glyphosate and a range of partners to provide multiple modes of action for resistance management.
