There’s a flavour for strong beef demand in the country, says Anne Wasko, market analyst with Gateway Livestock, which has producers feeling good about market positioning.
Last week’s slaughter report showed a 6.3 percent increase in animals killed in federally inspected plants in Canada, when compared to last year at this time.
It’s good news for packers, and cattle feeders, who are just starting to see shifts in margins now. Calf prices, Wasko adds, are on average, $35 a hundred higher.
But it’s not the same story for countries that export beef to Canada.
“There’s no question imports have been running down — beef imports into Canada down for the entire year,” says Wasko. “We’re down 10 percent. September itself…was down 12 percent from last year.”
