Canola School: Winter canola and the eastern experience

When we think of canola, we think Western Canada. And there’s no doubt that the prairies are the canola capital, but Meghan Moran, canola and edible bean specialist with the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, reminds us that there are still canola growers in Ontario, too.

While the all-time high of 90,000 acres grown is a far cry from the current average of 55,000, Moran notes in the Canola School below, that growing the Cinderella crop in Ontario provides some unique opportunities.

One of the major challenges, however, to growing canola in Ontario is Swede midge — the insect can cause such severe yield loss that some farmers have stopped growing the crop. But with the use of beneficial parasites and some experiments with winter canola, farmers are having some great success adding the oilseed to the crop rotation, including double cropping soybeans on winter canola stubble.
