Intercropping a must for new camelina contracts

Interested in growing camelina for Three Farmers? Get ready to intercrop.

Three Farmers, a Saskatchewan-based snack food company, is offering, for the first time, production contracts for camelina, an oilseed crop. A stipulation of the contract is that camelina be grown in tandem with either pea or lentil.

Likely the first-of-its-kind stipulation in a crop contract in Canada, Natasha Vandenurk, CEO of Three Farmers, says that intercropping is key component of the company’s commitment to certain agriculture practices.

Also of interest to growers, it was recently announced that 2018 marks the first year that Saskatchewan Crop Insurance will offer coverage for intercropped production.

Production contracts are limited for 2018. Farmers with questions on intercropping or the specifics of the camelina contracts can contact Three Farmers through their website.
