Use active math when evaluating nitrogen stabilizers

When growing corn, many farmers utilize nitrogen stabilizers to protect their fertilizer investment.

Agrotain has become a popular stabilizer choice for its ability to inhibit nitrification and protect nitrogen from ammonia volatilization. There are also products that protect against losses from denitrification and nitrate leaching. AGRIS Co-operative agronomist Dale Cowan says farmers can see a yield response ranging from five to 20 bu/ac when using Agrotain, with an average response of six bushels.

Cowan also notes that the nitrogen stabilizer market is changing quickly with the introduction of new generic products. “With expiring patents, there’s a lot of generics on the market, and they’re not all the same,” says Cowan.

In this video, Cowan explains how nitrogen stabilizers work to reduce nitrogen loss and the importance of understanding the specifications of each product to fully realize yield and environmental benefits.

“Even though a product may be cheaper per acre, you need to pay attention to the amount of active ingredient,” says Cowan. He recommends growers seek advice from agronomists and ag retailers and read labels “to understand how much active ingredient you need to treat a tonne. Be aware of what you are buying and make sure you get what you’re paying for.”
