TechTour: Automatically adjusting spread patterns for wind, terrain, and fertilizer type

by

Spreading fertilizer can feel like a bit of a guessing game when it comes to knowing just how wide of a spray pattern is produced. Coverage depends on the type of fertilizer in the hopper, the terrain, and also, how much wind impacts the spray pattern. But Amazone claims it offers solutions to each of these problems.

The company’s ZA-TS mounted spreaders and ZG-TS trailed spreaders don’t only offer working widths up to 54 metres, but also (optional) compensation for these changing factors through their ArgusTwin and WindControl technologies.

ArgusTwin

Through the ArgusTwin system, radar sensors on both sides of the spreader monitor spread fans, and the system re-adjusts electric delivery based on its findings, adjusting the throwing angle of spread patterns due to hilly terrain, inconsistencies in fertilizer, worn spreading vanes, or starting/stopping procedures.

With the addition of the company’s optional weighing system, operators can also receive assurance that the system is achieving the correct spread rate.

No calibration is necessary for the maintenance-friendly system, which, according to the company, offers more effective use of fertilizer.

WindControl

Offered in accordance with Karl Wild, HTW Dresden, Amazone’s WindControl supplements the ArgusTwin system, providing monitoring and compensation for wind.

The system uses a high frequency wind sensor to determine wind speed and direction, and the computer calculates new settings based on this data, and the data provided by the ArgusTwin, to determine optimal settings for the delivery system and spreading disc speed.

Side winds see disc speed decrease on the leeward side, and increase to the windward side, and the system sends out an automatic alarm if wind speeds exceed the system’s compensation capabilities.

RealAgriculture’s Shaun Haney caught up with Amazone’s Stephan Horstmann at Agritechnica, to find out just how the systems operate:

Both systems are available for ZA-TS mounted and ZG-TS trailered spreaders.
