Agronomy Geeks, Ep 1: Peter 'Wheat Pete' Johnson

by

If ever you’ve tried to communicate something you’ve learned or something you’ve experienced, you may have realized quickly that being an engaging communicator is actually quite difficult. Some are born with a talent for riveting storytelling, others work diligently to learn new ways to capture the audiences’ attention. And some, like Peter Johnson, are an interesting mix of talent, curiosity, hard work, and boundless enthusiasm.

Johnson, also known as WheatPete, has had a passion not just for farming and agronomy, but also for extension and learning, since the get-go. A former wheat specialist for the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, Johnson has long been known for his one-of-a-kind delivery of agronomic knowledge and problem solving. He’s boisterous, vocal, fun, and always, always, always willing to research any question you have regarding how to ‘grow amazing wheat’ (and other crops too!).

A few years ago, Johnson came on board with RealAgriculture as resident agronomist and host of the weekly Q-and-A podcast “Wheat Pete’s Word.” He’s also a regular part of the Corn School, Soybean School, and Wheat School, where he shares his particular brand of high-energy agronomic advice.

In this episode of the newly re-booted Agronomy Geeks podcast, we dig a little deeper into the person behind the persona. We ask Johnson about his mentors, how he honed his craft as talk show host agronomist, and just where he gets that energy from.
