Agricorp is keeping a close eye on vomitoxin levels in Ontario’s corn crop and telling growers not to destroy any crop at this time.
The provincial risk management program provider has indicated it will wait to see how the market and shipping season develops before making decisions on how to address damage claims as a result of high vomitoxin levels.
Real Agriculture agronomist Peter Johnson reports that elevators are generally accepting low-vomitoxin corn first and asking growers to leave high-vomitoxin corn in the field. After all the “good” corn is in the bin, it’s anticipated that a market for high-vomitoxin corn will develop.
Earlier this month the provincial government’s Grain Corn Ear Mould and Vomitoxin (DON) Survey indicated Ontario’s crop could have high toxin levels. Johnson notes that some samples coming off the combine have tested as high as 37 parts per million (ppm) for DON produced by gibberella.
