Feds announce more than $150 million for Protein Industries Canada Supercluster

by

The federal government has announced close to $153 million for support of the Protein Industries Canada (PIC) Supercluster. The funding will be matched dollar for dollar by the private sector.

The funds will help the group – comprised of businesses, post-secondary institutions, and non-profit organizations – move the PIC Supercluster forward. The purpose of the supercluster is to make Canada a world leader in the growing market for plant-based proteins.

In February of this year, the PIC was chosen as one of the winning proposals under the federal Innovation Superclusters Program. (What exactly is a supercluster? Read more here.)

“The global demand for plant-based protein continues to grow at a rapid pace and the signing of the contribution agreement will allow Protein Industries Canada to help industry seize this opportunity. We are very excited to move onto the next phase of our supercluster efforts and to work with industry to identify and support the projects that will establish Canada as a global leader in plant-based proteins.”
– Bill Greuel, CEO, Protein Industries Canada

It’s projected the PIC supercluster will create 4,500 jobs and could add more than $4.5 billion to Canada’s economy in a span of 10 years.

The other four superclusters include: the Digital Technology Supercluster, the Next Generation Manufacturing Supercluster (NGen), the AI-Powered Supply Chains Supercluster (SCALE AI), and the Ocean Supercluster.

In all, it’s projected all five groups will create more than 50,000 jobs and grow Canada’s GDP by more than $50 billion over the next 10 years.
