The canola industry is a made-in-Canada super success story. But that’s not to say that life at the top is worry free.
Jim Everson, president of the Canola Council of Canada, says that mounting concern about canola rotation and the related issues of heavier disease and insect pressure are examples of issues that have to be dealt with.
But emerging threats, such as clubroot, aren’t the only obstacles facing the canola industry. The Pest Management Regulatory Agency’s review of neonic seed treatments is still hanging over the 2019 growing season, and there’s that matter of three biotech traits awaiting approval of one of Canada’s largest export markets — China.
In the interview below, Shaun Haney and Everson cover a lot of ground, as Everson fields some tough questions on the challenges facing the canola industry. He notes that, very soon, growers and industry alike will get a more thorough look at the next steps for the council into 2019 and beyond.
