New plant and animal protein strategy unveiled for Manitoba

In an effort to keep its producers at the top of the global stage, the Manitoba government unveiled a first-of-its kind provincial protein strategy. The strategy has several prongs and will help both animal and plant protein development in the face of global demand, according to Manitoba Agriculture minister Ralph Eichler.

“With world demand continuing to grow for high-quality protein, Manitoba producers have an exciting opportunity to feature their products in an increased global market,” says Eichler.  “Our strategy will seek to grow livestock herds for animal protein and new acres for plant protein, while ensuring our province remains a strong environment for investment and that our government is attuned to the needs of producers.”

This strategy will also keep in line the government’s focus on creating growth for research and innovation along with attracting various businesses to invest, the governement says. The strategy is also the first sector specific strategy under the Economic Growth Action Plan.

Main topics covered in the plan include:

  • an increase to livestock processing;
  • ensuring hog supply matches processing capabilities;
  • increasing the cattle breeding herd;
  • continuing to develop the sheep industry;
  • new investments in new plant protein extraction; and,
  • positioning the province as a leading research and development centre in North America for plant protein extraction technology.

Livestock production and processing together accounts contributes more than $4 million to the Manitoban economy along with adding an estimated 4,500 jobs.
