The spread of African swine fever (ASF) heightened starting in 2007, with the start of its spread across several countries in central Asia, into China (2018), and Europe. It is highly contagious, spreads rapidly, and is of grave concern to pork producers worldwide.
To date, ASF has not been found in Canada.
“If we sit down and congratulate ourselves, we are going to suffer for that,” says Rick Bergmann, Canadian Pork Council chair. “A lot of work has happened ’til now, a lot of work is coming up ahead of us. So it’s a daunting, big task, but I believe we can do the very best we can with the teams that we have in place.”
In this interview from Canada’s Ag Day, Bergmann speaks to RealAg Radio host Shaun Haney about the risk of ASF, the role of coronavirus in perhaps slowing its spread, protein smuggling, pork producer profitability, and investing in the prevention of ASF.
