During planting season, Kearney Planters service manager Shaun Dilliott gets plenty of calls from growers asking for seed meter management advice.
Most of those calls come from soybean growers looking for tips on two types of meters — a John Deere radial meter or a Kinze brush meter. On this episode of RealAgriculture’s Soybean School, Dilliott takes us inside the Kinze brush meter for a look at how to effectively manage brushes and maintain plates. He also reminds growers that maintenance is just as important for mechanical meters as it is for vacuum meters.
With soybean meters, grower calls usually focus on maintenance questions and how to manage “sticky beans,” says Dilliott. He notes that growers need to be mindful of new seed treatments that can become sticky when applied to seed. To manage the issue, he recommends starting with lots of graphite and “if we start getting sticky beans you should add a little bit of talc.”
To avoid those last-minute calls, Dilliott recommends annual maintenance for all seed meters. It’s worth the investment and it keeps your meter running smoothly during soybean planting, he adds.
