Soybean School: Fungicide applications and tank mixing strategies

Fungicide timing can creep up really fast in soybeans and staging is at about the R2 stage or when there are flowers on the upper two nodes of the plant. In this episode of RealAgriculture  Soybean School, Bernard Tobin talks with agronomist Ken Currah from BASF Canada about correct fungicide timing in soybeans and some tank mixing strategies.

Check out the video below for great photos of soybean staging for fungicide application and more information. (Story continues below)

“Coverage is everything when it comes to fungicide,” says Currah. Regardless of the product, 20 gallons per acre of water is required to get good coverage.

If an insect, such as soybean aphids, or a plant health product is also a consideration, Currah recommends not mixing three products together. “Three products in the tank gets a little complex for that soybean to handle,” says Currah, and is a lot of chemistry for the plant to metabolize, especially if it’s under stress. However, two products in the tank is still an option if the tank mix is recommended.

White mould management in particular can get quite complex due to environmental conditions and field history. Currah recommends a two-pass approach if white mould is inevitable due to field history. The first pass should be made with a product that targets white mould specifically. The second pass can be made when the crop is entering the R3 stage.
