Co-op opens new fertilizer terminal at Grassy Lake, Alberta

by

Federated Co-operatives Limited (FCL) has officially opened its $42.8 million fertilizer terminal located near Grassy Lake, Alta.

Construction on the facility was announced in February of 2019, and the terminal began receiving product in June of this year.

The new terminal warehouses, blends, and distributes a full suite of crop nutrition products including liquid micronutrients and nitrogen stabilizers, the company says in a press release.

“We made this investment understanding the important role the fertilizer terminal will play in serving local co-ops and helping them meet the needs of their members and customers,” says Ron Healey, vice president of ag and consumer business at FCL. “Having a fertilizer terminal in Alberta improves Co-op’s ability to efficiently and effectively deliver crop nutrition products to local farmers in a timely matter, which is critical during the growing season.”

The new terminal has a storage capacity of 34,400 metric tonnes, and along with two other facilities — one at Hanley, Sask., and the other at Brandon, Man. — the Co-op’s combined storage capacity is 106,900 metric tonnes for the Prairies. All three locations have rail access, and the Grassy Lake location was built with a loop track that can accommodate up to 110 railcars.

The terminal can load a super-B trailer in six minutes and can dispense up to 400 metric tonnes of straight fertilizer per hour.
