Thinking digital — technology opportunities for farming


Trends and opportunities always seem to crop up in people’s minds as the end of the year draws closer and as we enter into a new one. In terms of digital technology, there are some new opportunities for applications in farm management.

Casper Kaastra, general manager of crop production at Sollio Agriculture, recently spoke with RealAgriculture’s Bernard Tobin to explores some of the opportunities in this recap of his recent presentation at Farm Business Management’s AgEx conference.

“In the early days when [GPS and precision technology] came out, farmers had the tools, but not really great ways of using them and being efficient,” says Kaastra. “In most cases they were actually more difficult to be calibrated than to getting value back out of them.”

The technology is a lot more plug and play now, says Kaastra, allowing farmers to use the tech in real-time or to evaluate and analyze their enterprises. Troubleshooting problem areas, decision-making based on information gathered, and identifying opportunities for improving areas of a field are all examples Kaastra can give of technology aiding a farmer, in terms of crop production on the front end.

On the back end of it all, Sollio Agriculture has integrated technology into their procurement functions — automation and connectivity keeps product in supply, and digital tech helps with shipping grain.
