Get cleaner ears with Trecepta®

Across Eastern Canada, growers have faced an uphill battle managing pest pressures in corn. Insects like Western bean cutworm have increased in population, year after year, spreading to more regions across Ontario and Quebec. These pests damage corn ears and leave the crop vulnerable to mold and other diseases. But growers have a tool to defend their crop against these yield-robbing insects before their seed is even in the ground.

The first step is selecting the right trait to lay the foundation for the rest of the season. Trait technology can offer insect control or suppression from day one, allowing growers to get ahead of pests before they even become a problem.

Trecepta® RIB Complete® is Bayer’s latest corn trait, helping growers gain broad-spectrum control of above-ground pests, including European corn borer, fall armyworm, corn earworm, black cutworm and Western bean cutworm. The trait combines three unique modes of action for more complete insect control, and is built on the proven performance of VT Double PRO® technology.

“Choosing a trait with more than one mode of action can provide control of a wider spectrum of above-ground pests,” says Brock Smith, Bayer Market Development Representative.  “The added benefit of a Vip3A protein can make a big difference, especially for growers dealing with higher Western bean cutworm and black cutworm pressure. Stacking these modes of action is also an effective management practice to help delay the potential for trait resistance from corn earworm.”

Although yield losses from Western bean cutworm has estimated to reach up to 15 bu/ac,* insect infestation is only half the battle. In fact, the residual damage from insect feeding is often of greater importance. Feeding insects can open up the corn ear and allow for mold and mycotoxin development, affecting grain quality and marketability at the end of the season.

With broad-spectrum protection against above-ground pests, Trecepta technology can be part of a tailored solution to reduce Gibberella ear rot and DON infections in corn, when used in combination with a fungicide and other management techniques. Trecepta also contains Roundup Ready® 2 Technology, allowing farmers to apply a Roundup® branded herbicide for effective weed control.

“A good pest management strategy considers more than just yield,” says Smith. “Trecepta technology delivers maximum protection to reduce yield loss and improve grain quality, helping to put more grain in the bin and more money in the bank.”**
