by

Will there be any precipitation headed our way? Is an early spring frost event coming? These are the weather-related questions that seem to be on everybody’s mind in the west.

Brett Anderson of AccuWeather joins guest host Lyndsey Smith for today’s RealAg LIVE! focused on weather trends heading in to the seeding season.

RealAg LIVE! streams every weekday at 3 pm E on Youtube, Facebook, and Twitter!

SUMMARY

  • Latest info up through March 1, throughout Sask and into Man, soil moisture is well below normal
  • Already in a pretty huge deficit, but is there good news coming? It’s not bad news, but Brett can’t see any good news yet.
  • Still under the influence of a La Niña, so lots of wind and dry weather; more storminess expected across B.C., then windy dry conditions will dominate for much of the spring. Concerning
  • What would it take to turn that around? Changing winds across the Pacific. Even though it may be weakening, the influence will still be felt for a few months.
  • Take this as a warning, getting prepared for seeding, anticipate a dry spring
  • Forecasting can only go so far into the future; how far in advance can we be confident of the forecast? About two weeks
  • When there isn’t a La Niña or El Niño, forecasts rely on analogs (the past) or water temperatures
  • Looking at the patterns right now, it looks similar to spring of 2018
