Fire at JBS beef plant causes significant damage

Editor’s note: According to a representative of JBS USA, the fire was limited to the rendering facility and processing is set to begin again this week at the site, pending an assessment of the site. There were no injuries reported.

A fire at the Grand Island, Nebraska, JBS beef slaughter and processing facility has closed the plant until further notice.

According to the plant’s Facebook page, JBS Grand Island Beef, both the day and evening shifts had been cancelled.

Local media reports that the fire started sometime late Sunday and fire crews were still on site as of mid-morning Monday, September 13.

The suspected cause of the blaze has not yet been released. Drover’s reports the fire affected the rendering part of the plant, and involved the roof of the building.

The facility processes approximately 6,000 head of cattle per day.
