Walmart Canada commits to 1.5 million pounds of sustainably-raised beef

by

Over the next year, Walmart Canada will source 1.5 million pounds of beef sourced from CRSB Certified sustainable farms and ranches.

To qualify, farmers and ranchers must be certified through a third-party audited system, in accordance with sustainability standards set by the Canadian Roundtable for Sustainable Beef (CRSB).

Walmart says this is just the first commitment, and that the amount of CRSB Certified beef it demands will increase year-over-year.

“Leadership from organizations like Walmart inspires change and supports the Canadian beef sector’s continuous improvement goals,” says Anne Wasko, chair of the CRSB. “The CRSB is honoured to partner with Walmart Canada on this ambitious commitment on its journey towards a more sustainable future.”

Walmart Canada is a supply-chain partner of the CRSB’s program in Canada.

“We’re immensely proud of what this commitment signifies to the industry and the impact it will have for our farmers and ranchers, customers, suppliers and partners,” says Horacio Barbeito, president and CEO of Walmart Canada. “We’re making massive strides towards advancing sustainability within the Canadian beef industry, propelled by our commitment to being a regenerative company and made possible by strong partnerships with the CRSB and our suppliers.”

Regardless of certification, Walmart Canada sources 100 per cent of its fresh beef in Canada, the company says.
