Clean Seed's MAX seeder like a multi-tool for agronomy

by

Clean Seed’s new SMART Seeder MAX is surely a seeding unit like no other.

For an in-depth discussion on the SMART Seeder MAX, Kara Oosterhuis caught up with Colin Rush, COO of Clean Seed, at their new assembly facility at Saskatoon, Sask.

With a completely different way of engaging in the ground, the SMART Seeder is designed to be a true no-till unit, Rush says — the opener looks like a big saw-tooth blade that can cut through last year’s residue, crack through soil, and meters place seed and fertilizer very precisely.

“This unit is essentially a giant printer — versus an air seeder or planter technology we might have anywhere from five to ten to 50 control points — there’s 300 different control points that we’re metering product out here and each one of them is an independent, variable rate, multiple product seeder,” says Rush.

The precise metering can allow for plant-to-plant agronomy, says Rush. The new computing system is also proactively built for variable rate mapping resolutions that don’t necessarily exist yet, but in the meantime, gives a leg up for producers using prescriptions.

Logistically, it’s a big machine — 60 feet on 12-inch spacing — so the horsepower required is around 6 to 6.5 horsepower per row. Generally, Rush says a 450 to 500 horsepower machine will pull on flat land, and in hills, 550 to 600 horsepower as there’s a significant demand on hydraulic horsepower as well.
