Wheat Pete's Word, Feb 23: Sowthistle trouble, market madness, dormant seeding, and waste potatoes

by

Ask Wheat Pete and he’ll tell you that every day is Canada’s Agriculture Day, but for everyone else, it was February 22nd, and we hope you had a great time celebrating the people that make Canadian agriculture great.

In this week’s podcast episode, host Peter Johnson tackles some key questions on Delta yield, the nutrient value of waste potatoes, and a five-year plan for controlling sowthistle. Oh, and he offers up some sage marketing advice too (i.e. don’t do what Pete does!)

Have a question you’d like Johnson to address or some yield results to send in? Disagree with something he’s said? Leave him a message at 1-888-746-3311, send him a tweet (@wheatpete), or email him at [email protected].

SUMMARY

  • Canada’s Agriculture Day was February 22nd. Celebrate!
  • Don’t worry, you don’t need to kill the wheat crop again. It will be OK after all this rain in Ontario, so long as ponding is less than two weeks
  • Market madness! The business of farming — Steve Kell, soybean update. South American crop is shrinking
  • 30 per cent of wheat and corn comes out of Ukraine
  • Uncertainty pushes prices higher
  • Want to do a great job marketing? Don’t do what Pete does!
  • Can’t go broke making a profit
  • Washington state, September and October planted wheat, didn’t germ to December. Will it be OK? Yes, very likely
  • Ultra-early seeding of spring cereals with Brian Beres is here. Dormant seeding is happening too!
  • Delta yield discussion. Is it OK to count herbicide pass as zero N (with liquid N)? Only starter vs. full rate.
  • 2022 Grasshopper forecast is out. Some areas in Saskatchewan will be on high alert
  • Predictor tools matter, y’all
  • Rainfall drives just about every input decision
  • Why does prediction matter? More than economics
  • Deep frost breaking up compaction? Why are dry cracks are better? When freezing happens, it splits horizontally, and when it thaws, it settles in the same place. Dryness, however, move downward
  • Do waste potatoes replace starter fertilizer? They’re being spread back on fields in P.E.I
  • Watch the C:N ratio (37:1), N will be tied up ahead of wheat (spring), but spread ahead of corn might get 50% out of them
  • Control of Canada thistle or perennial sowthistle, the gold standard is fall control, and no corn in rotation, because of timing. It took five years
