Larger farms have higher percentage of fertilizer in place ahead of '22 crop season, survey suggests

by

In the face of prolonged uncertainty, many farmers aren’t sure if the fertilizer required for the 2022 planting and seeding season will arrive in time. There’s an added layer of uncertainty in regards to what the final price tag will be when the fertilizer does arrive, as well.

In late March, the RealAgristudies Insights Panel weighed in on several aspects of fertilizer logistics and planning ahead of the ’22 season. One of the key findings of the survey was the relationship between farm size and volume of needed fertilizer already on the farm.

Whether it is because of more risk associated with just-in-time delivery, the investment in storage and infrastructure over time, or financial ability to hold inventory is still a matter of speculation, but the relationship between the two factors carried through, even across geographies.

The 2022 RealAgristudies fertilizer survey was open for one week, with 450 respondents. The majority of survey responses were received from Ontario, Saskatchewan, and Alberta.
