Manitoba's first avian flu case confirmed

by

The number of Canadian farms – and provinces – where birds are testing positive for highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza continues to climb.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency confirmed Manitoba’s first case on a poultry farm on April 23. The farm is located near Elma, in the Rural Municipality of Whitemouth, on the eastern side of the province.

As of April 24, the number of poultry farms and small flocks affected since late March in Ontario has reached 18, involving at least 250 thousand birds.

Alberta is up to 16 cases, affecting more than 340 thousand birds.

5 cases have also been confirmed in Quebec, 4 in Saskatchewan, while B.C. and now, Manitoba, each have 1 confirmed on-farm case.

More info on case counts and locations can be found on the CFIA website.

If you suspect birds have avian influenza, contact a veterinarian to determine if further action is needed, or nearest CFIA Animal Health office. Anyone who finds a sick or dead wild bird is encouraged to contact the Canadian Wildlife Health Cooperative (CWHC).
