Wheat Pete's Word, Apr 6: Slot closure, dormant seeding, testing manure, and encouraging tillering

by

If the weather cooperates in the next week or so, plenty of equipment will be rolling in Ontario. The ultra early seeding is already (or has already) happened in Western Canada, and some farmers are pretty excited to see if dormant seeding is the right call.

And as we gear up for #plant22, farmers have more questions and nitrogen rates and efficiency. Peter “Wheat Pete” Johnson answers some of those questions here, plus sorting through manure rates, using biostrips and more.

Have a question you’d like Johnson to address or some yield results to send in? Disagree with something he’s said? Leave him a message at 1-888-746-3311, send him a tweet (@wheatpete), or email him at [email protected].

SUMMARY

  • Ultra early wheat is happening in Saskatchewan
  • Yeah, baby, give ‘er!
  • Frost seeding tips? If the slot doesn’t close, should you worry?
  • Dormant fall seeded in November…ohhhhhh my, this looks interesting
  • Biostrip tour happening, check it out on FieldCropNews
  • Somewhere in between plant green and strip till
  • Interview with Mark Gasparotto into what’s happening in Ukraine. Incredible.
  • News sites reporting on Calgary couple who took 160 acres and claim to 1 per cent OM to 10 per cent in five years, by pasturing cattle. How can that be? No imported N? You need N to cycle carbon! Would love to see the soil tests
  • Use all the tools in the toolbox — Full toolbox farmers!
  • The wheat crop is looking good…except on the heavy clays
  • 40 per cent tear up on heavy ground? Ouch.
  • Lots of syrup, means you’re short on bread (freeze/thaw)
  • Questionable wheat: do you put N and S right away? Depends if you have the N already and just how questionable it is
  • P on the surface, only if you have really low P levels in soil test
  • How much N promotes tillering?
  • What about stabilizers? Set your reminder for April 18, 8 pm E and go here
  • Is S an N stabilizers? About 40 per cent as effective as a “real” N stabilizer
  • Incorporation is important to limit losses too
  • Hog manure on wheat: what you need to know. Hog manure is the in-between dairy and chicken — some times it works, some times it doesn’t
  • More K in potato-fed cow manure? Yup. How much? Test it!
