As the calendar quickly flips through the summer months, eyes are beginning to focus on the Agricultural Policy Framework — or APF — meetings set for July.
Each province has their ask, and their focus on what should be top priorities at the meetings.
Nate Horner, Minister of Alberta Agriculture, Forestry, and Rural Economic Development, recently joined RealAg Politics to break down Alberta’s position.
The number one priority, says Minister Horner, is to see the overall Canadian Agricultural Partnership (CAP) envelope to be increased. (Story continues below video)
“I think the provinces are willing to put up their proportionate spend, but they want to see some balance. They want to see that it’s not just new dollars in the bucket to fight greenhouse gas emissions. That it’s actually going to strengthen our business risk management suite, that it will give us more ability to adapt,” he explains. “We want to see some more money. And we want to ensure that this business risk management suite isn’t diluted.”
The pot of cash for business risk management is an area that has stayed very stagnant for the last 10 years, says Horner, which is why they think it is time for change.
“It’s an area that we think deservedly should see an increase. The province will pay our share, we just want to make sure that the different buckets of money are in the right places, and to the right amount.”
