The Manitoba Association of Watersheds (MAW) and Saskatchewan Association of Watersheds are rolling out the Prairie Watersheds Climate Program.
The first phase of program includes up to $40 million available in funding for projects in Manitoba and Saskatchewan that focus on beneficial management practice (BMP) uptake and awareness.
Funded by Agriculture Agri-Food Canada’s On-Farm Climate Action Fund, eligible BMPs must focus on three categories: rotational grazing, nitrogen management and cover cropping.
“We are ready to roll,” says Lynda Nicol, MAW executive director. “There has been a tremendous amount of hard work and collaborative effort behind the scenes that has led to today’s program launch. We have been in constant motion with a team of internal staff and external industry partners ever since the announcement first was made public earlier this year.”
MAW is the lead organization managing the program, which will run until March 31, 2024. The funding is administered in partnership with Saskatchewan Association of Watersheds and supported by Manitoba Forage and Grassland Association and other agriculture and conservation groups.
