Field bin concept seeing uptake among farms of all sizes

by

A Saskatchewan-based company that builds 6500 bushel mobile field bins says the concept — still relatively new to North America — is gaining traction among farms of all sizes.

The fall of 2022 will mark the third harvest for Vale Industries’ Grain Giant, which is built at the company’s factory along the Trans-Canada Highway at Indian Head, Sask.

“We’ve seen the application on all sizes of farms — large farms with eight or nine combines and a small owner/operator who wants to combine and deal with the trucking themselves,” notes Kendra Cruson, owner and chief operating officer of Vale Industries in the interview below, recorded beside the 60′ behemoth at Ag in Motion ’22.

The concept of mobile field bins — sometimes called “mother” or surge bins — originates in Australia. The portable storage units are used to maximize harvest efficiency by allowing combines to keep running when trucks can’t keep up. Trucks also don’t have to wait for grain carts to get to the end of the field, as they can be loaded at anytime, with the Grain Giant’s discharge auger moving up to 550 bushels of grain per minute, notes Cruson.
