Iowa State University has been collecting data and building a scouting app that can identify about 2,000 insect pests at varying stages.
“This app can not only identify the adult stage insect, but it can also identify other various stages, like a nymph or caterpillar,” says Dr. Arti Singh, assistant professor in the department of agronomy at Iowa State University.
The app also identifies if the insect is beneficial or harmful to the crop.
The app was created with the notion that in this day and age, most everyone has a cell phone in their pocket and has the ability to take a picture. Even if the user doesn’t have an internet or data connection in the field, they are still able to identify the insect when they get back home or some other area where there is internet, eliminating the need for manuals and other sources to help identify what it was they saw.
The new app is set to be available for use in 2023.
