The technology that allows for varying seed and fertilizer has evolved well past on/off sectional control, despite less-than-widespread adoption of the tool.
Any new agronomic tech has to solve a problem, save time, or make more yield in order to earn its way onto farms. That said, if regulations require a certain outcome, such as reducing emissions from fertilizer applications, some farmers may adopt change not because it’s profitable, but because it’s required.
In the September 2022 Fertilizer Emissions Survey, through the RealAgristudies Insights Panel, farmers were asked about several farming practices, including soil testing, adjusting fertilizer rates, and the current adoption of variable rate technology. Taking it a step further, we asked how a reduction target, such as the 30 per cent goal for nitrous oxide set by the current federal government, may impact the likelihood of farmers adopting the tech.
Of over 500 respondents, 46 per cent they were likely to adopt variable rate technology in response to emissions reduction requirements.
