Excitement is building in Alberta’s Peace Country and Northeast Saskatchewan.

A new landmark appeared this summer near the village of Rycroft, Alberta: the 140-foot-tall concrete silos of the new G3 Rycroft grain elevator, due to open next year.

“It looks like it’s going to be quite the high-end facility. You’ll be able to offload quick — just open your gates and away you go,” says Brad Ross, who farms in the Rycroft area.

“Speed and efficiency — that’s what we’re hearing producers say they’re really looking forward to,” says G3 Rycroft General Manager Quinton Bulford. “And more competition with another player in the market.”

It’s the same kind of anticipation around Melfort, Saskatchewan, where another G3 elevator is at a similar stage of construction.

“We are excited to tell farmers about the speed and efficiency of the terminal,” says G3 Melfort General Manager Greg Claypool. “We have had lots of interest in the loop track loading system as it’ll be the first in Northeast Saskatchewan.”

G3 elevators are built with loop tracks that can load a 150-car train in continuous motion and send it quickly on its way to G3 Terminal Vancouver for export. G3’s loop track system is speeding up the grain supply chain, creating more marketing and delivery opportunities for farmers.

“Having a rail loop is going to be huge,” says Melfort-area farmer Dean Hurd. “It’s more consistent money. I can contract grain and have a good idea it’s going to move in that delivery period,” he says.

“They’ll be able to make deals for huge tonnes and be able to move it quick,” says Ross.

Since G3’s inception in 2015, the company has opened 14 high-efficiency grain elevators across the Canadian Prairies. G3 Rycroft and G3 Melfort will push the total to 16 when they open in spring 2023.

Farmers are happy to have more competition in the grain market in their areas and a facility that can unload a Super-B grain truck in less than five minutes.

“Speed is the biggest thing. I love efficiency. If I can dump and get out of there quick, it’s great,” Hurd says.

The new facilities are already hiring staff and contacting producers in the area. G3 is reaching out to communities and sponsoring local sports teams and facilities.

G3 employs more than 600 staff at facilities across Canada. The company’s head office is in Winnipeg.
