The way we farm is continuously changing, through knowledge-transfer, new technology, and innovation.
How farmers take care of farms and the land required to raise livestock and produce grain is changing too — for the better. Soil health may have become a bit of a buzzword in recent years, but that’s not to diminish its importance in our industry.
We are beginning to recognize where soil health fits into climate policy, higher yields, and regenerative agriculture.
Grazing plans are being developed on-farm, too, to get the most out of pasture land. Farmers are minimizing tillage where they can, and soil testing to see just what that soil may need without risking losses to the environment. Crop residue is being studied to determine what nutrients it gives back to the soil and when.
How we look at soil is continuing to evolve, and it’s exciting to see the leaps and bounds we may take next.
So, on this World Soil Day, I’ve compiled a list of some of my favourite interviews and stories revolving around soil health from the terrific group of journalists here at RealAgriculture.
